A beautiful morning in Berkeley, April 2016
I'm loving the time management/prioritization concept of "3 big rocks," which I discovered via writing coach Jenna Avery, and she credits to Stephen Covey.
If you're not familiar with the concept, Jenna explains it nicely in this blog post, so I won't recap it here.
This has got me thinking: what are my three big rocks, overall, in my life right now?
Two are easy: Boys. Book.
But what's the third? I'm torn between two possibilities.
It could be Wellness, which would include my near-daily attempts ... more
I turned 40 on January 5. When your birthday coincides with a new year, you get to think of your own evolution and the year's in the same breath. I'm not a big fan of New Year's Resolutions, but I do like to use the turning point of a new year to take a step back and think about where I'm going, and how I'm getting there.
We were in San Diego, as we luckily often are for the holidays. Mikhail and I took our customary walk on the beach. ... more
This year, we went for verbs.
Embrace
Grow
Thrive
I think "grow" and "thrive" are pretty self-explanatory. My short-hand for what “embrace” means in this context is “embrace the chaos.” Of course, that doesn’t necessarily sound that inspiring. Chaos sounds messy, out of control. Who wants to admit their life feels like that? But maybe it would be helpful to me if I did not just admit there is chaos, but really embrace the messiness of life, at least this phase of it.

I'm sure there are psychologist and personal growth experts who have written treatises about the phenomena of what happens when you set your mind to try to make something happen. I am not a psychologist or personal growth expert. But I can tell you that the choice of the word “intention” as one of Mikhail and my three words for the year has been a powerful one.
I think I chose the word because I was already seeing that at work in ... more
Words for 2014:
IntentionPlay&Wild spirit
For the fifth year in a row, Mikhail and I picked words for the year. Having done this now multiple years, I notice the trend. When we pick the words, we have a general sense of being inspired by those words, but we have no idea how they'll play out. Then the year starts, and they tend to feel foreign to me for the first month or two, like I'm just trying them out.
By March or so, I start to think of them as touchstones ... more
Way back when 2013 was just a newborn year, Mikhail and I got the chance to do our annual tradition of completing the year just past and setting our intentions for the year being born.
And then we got to write them on the beach, cause that's a big part of the fun.
Resilience.
Which sometimes looks more like this:
Nature's an excellent role model for resilience.
Being connected.Powerful expression.
Because Mikhail always likes to throw one in to really challenge me.
Do you set intentions for the new year? I find ... more
In what has become a yearly tradition, right around New Year's, Mikhail and I took a walk on the beach and figured out some words to express what we are hoping for this year.
I know it's March now, and I'm talking about January, but bear with me. I needed to let these words grow on me a little before I was ready to share them.
Besides, being on time isn't one of my strengths.
Once we figure out the words, we write them in the sand. Last year, we had this ... more
In what is becoming a yearly tradition, in early January, Mikhail & I picked our word for the year:
Or two.
Okay, three.
Words that describe what we want to create for 2011, the possibility we want to live into.
Abundance, vitality & faith.
I love how the three relate, connect, and influence each other. When I imagine vitality, I can imagine energy propelling me into abundance. When I am confronted by the idea of abundance, I think of the backbone of faith.
And I love how the word abundance contains dance inside it, ... more
On my birthday, a few days after the New Year, we went out for dinner with my parents, sister, and brother-in-law. Everyone at the table made a toast at some point in the evening. Mine was To a year of Courage.
Courage: mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear or difficulty (Merriam-Webster).
Courage means being in action in the face of fear. If you experience no fear, you summon no courage. I think it's interesting that a word we associate with physicality (the image of a knight, ... more
