my first guest post
So excited to have my first guest post published, on writing coach and writer Jenna Avery’s site.
And I love that she picked a swimming image for the post, since swimming laps is a key part of my mental health routine, and something that can help me get un-stuck in life in general.
I’m also hoping that today a lap swim will help loosen up my aching back, which I hurt yesterday doing nothing more strenuous than carrying my 30-pound little monkey two blocks from Elan’s camp drop-off back to our car. Yowza.

I was immediately drawn to your post because the image of a woman swimming speaks to me. Most mornings, as the sun is rising, I’m at the outdoor pool swimming, thinking, meditating, praying, and planning as I mechanically go back and forth. Once, I remember trying to resolve how to handle a difficult student and I realized that I was imagining hundreds of his heads bobbing away from me in the pool. It was very cleansing. No violence involved!
This is the beauty of “Me Time.” I’m with you, I don’t like that phrase, but I am a firm believer that a Mom must take care of herself, so that she may attempt to meet everyone else’s needs during the day, and children have a lot of needs, not to mention husbands. An exercise like swimming or running does allow one to escape into the mind for some peacetime. That to me is the most important part of exercise. Fortunately, it has a few other benefits.
I had to laugh at your “well coifed, mani-pedi, reading a magazine” comment. It’s taken me 40 years to get here and I’m still not well coifed, but I am cut and colored. I’m finally at the point where I indulge and do not feel guilty. Your day will come.
So this is my writing time. In my retirement, one of my goals is to write a note everyday. Yours is one of my first. Love your blog!
Barbara, I love your comment. Sounds like swimming laps is mind-clearing for both of us, though I must admit I don’t go at sunrise. Love hearing your support for mothers taking time for themselves, whatever we call it. You’re one of my mothering role models! Happy Retirement!
