Last night, to celebrate Winter Solstice, we went to Muir Woods. It seemed fitting to welcome the longest night of the year in a place full of fern-filled shadows, where the redwoods block much of the sun even on a summer day.Luminarias lit the trails. The ground was soaked, the air filled with the damp, fecund smells of wet wood, crushed redwood needles, and muddy earth. It didn't rain, but drops of water sometimes found their way through the redwood canopy to land on an unsuspecting baby's head. He didn't notice though, snuggled up in the Ergo baby carrier, lulled by his Mama's warmth and motion, and of course, since he does have responsible parents, wearing a hat.And a solstice crown. Apparently that's what they call a wreath of greenery worn on one's head. Elan wanted nothing to do with the crown I made for him. It was deemed too prickly on his head. We informed him that's cause you're supposed to wear a hat when you're in the redwood forest on a rainy night in the middle of December, but in his world, hats and hoods are only ... more
my first engagement ringThis pregnancy has really forced encouraged me to re-think my expectations of myself and of my body. Pregnancy this time around has been so different from my pregnancy with Elan. I'm more tired and crabby. I have more aches and pains. Back pain, hip pain, pain places I don't want to talk about on the Internet. The baby is low, and my back is straining, so I have a back/belly brace to help support my back.I have a map of veins down one leg, so I have ... more
These pictures are actually from two weeks ago, when we were in Washington and I was 32 weeks, but you get the idea. It's incredible what people will say to you when you're pregnant. My husband thinks I take the comments overly seriously, but I tell him he has no idea how many I respond to kindly. I understand how impressive it is to see what basically looks like a belly the size of a small human being strapped onto another body. I get it. I'm pretty amazed by it ... more
where we are now - so beautifulI've always loved travel. But being gone for more than half of this August has been a bit much for me. At 32 weeks pregnant, my homing instinct is strong. I crave my own dishes in the sink, my own groceries (or lack of) in the fridge, my own bed (even if I do need to figure out how to soften it up for my aching-preggo hips). People have been good to me while we do our family-visiting; everyone has been helping me ... more
30 weeksWarning: this post involves vomit. You might want to put down your sandwich.I might have mentioned before that I am not a puker. I have not vomited in 22 years, except when I was in labor with Elan, and labor doesn't count. I have weathered three 3-month-long bouts of terrible morning-sickness, garden-variety food poisoning in Mexico, a few instances of being room-spinningly drunk, and several severe cases of various third-world intestinal parasites without ever actually throwing up. Sometimes I thought I'd feel better if I could just puke, ... more
You haven't heard from me because we've been on the road a lot lately. Currently Elan and I are in New Jersey for a family wedding, while Mikhail remembers a bit of the bachelor experience at home. My relatives have deer in their backyard, a blow-up giraffe pool on the deck, and no wireless Internet. Be back another day for more!
So here we are in San Diego, where the weather has taken a serious lesson in gloom. For the last three mornings, it's been raining. RAINING! IN SAN DIEGO, IN THE SUMMER! And then it's cold and gloomy for the rest of the day. I believe the weather is actually worse here than in the Bay Area, which is saying something given it's July.Unfortunately, Elan's behavior is pretty gloomy too. Sometimes travel does wonders for him, helps break him out of fussy patterns. Generally speaking, he's quite delightful while traveling. ... more
Spend the afternoon. You can't take it with you.-Annie DillardLake Tahoe, 23 weeksWe spent a few days at Lake Tahoe with my parents, aka Nana & Babu, my sister Laura, brother-in-law Jason and their 9-month-old son Judah.Laura, Jason & JudahJudah and Elan are a study in contrasts. Judah is a great sleeper and loves to eat. Need I say more?"Dude, can I have some of those?"Judah covets Elan's crackers. The boys are wearing my favorite kiddo hooded towels. They're super-soft, warm enough to take away a post-swim chill, ... more
Thanks to my friend and fellow blogger Gracy, I am happy to introduce you to the culmination of an art form that you might never have been exposed to before: the Peruvian music video. If you've never seen a Peruvian music video, featuring popular Andean huayno music (we always joked in our year in Peru that it was appropriately named as to our ears it sounds like whining), you are in for a treat. And even if you have been forced to sit through too many huayno music ... more
We are leaving tomorrow morning for the Epic Back East Trip. Almost midnight and still packing (as usual). Feeling a little worried about how it's all going to pan out. Wondering if I'm going to be kicking myself for getting myself into this. What am I - crazy?I might be updating the blog regularly from the road. But then again, I might not.
The last time I did a cross-country flight alone with Elan, it involved: 7 diaper changes; 3 episodes of explosive diarrhea (his); 1 destroyed airplane blanket (thankfully only the blanket, not the seat); 2 cases of raging pink eye and associated Nastiest Virus of the Winter (both of us); 1 episode of begging wipes from the other family on the plane; and 2 interactions with unsympathetic flight attendants that must have sufficiently labeled me mom on the edge that they ignored the fact that my computer was playing ... more
